Lionel Messi has been named in Argentina’s squad for a farewell appearance with the national team, following his decision to bring his international career to an end.
The 39-year-old forward is expected to feature in Argentina’s friendly against Benin on October 6 at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. The match has been arranged as an official farewell for the Argentina captain.
Messi announced his retirement from international football on August 31, bringing an end to a national team career spanning more than two decades. He finished his Argentina career with 207 appearances and 125 goals.
During his international career, Messi helped Argentina win the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Argentina Football Association President Claudio Tapia said Messi had been invited to receive the farewell he deserved, with the fixture expected to mark his final appearance in the national team colours.
Messi will not feature in Argentina’s earlier friendlies against Bolivia on September 30 and Burkina Faso on October 3. His farewell against Benin is expected to be his final appearance for the national team.
