Japan Fight Back Twice to Hold Netherlands in Dramatic 2–2 World Cup Opener

Japan produced a spirited late surge to secure a 2–2 draw against the Netherlands in a thrilling World Cup Group F opener in Texas, with an 88th-minute equaliser sealing a dramatic comeback.

The Dutch side appeared to be closing in on all three points after twice taking the lead and managing the tempo of the game for long spells. However, Japan refused to back down, showing resilience and attacking intent in the closing stages of the encounter.

Their persistence paid off late in the second half when Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada was credited with the equalising goal after his effort deflected past the Dutch goalkeeper, sending the Japanese bench into wild celebrations.

The result leaves both sides with a point each in a tightly contested group, while Japan’s late fightback will be seen as a major statement of intent in their opening World Cup fixture.
