Chief of Defence Staff Raises Alarm Over Lack of National Census, Citing Security Concerns

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has expressed serious concerns over the country’s failure to conduct a recent national census, warning that the absence of accurate population data is jeopardizing national security and damaging Nigeria’s global credibility.

Speaking during an advocacy visit by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yar’Adua, and members of the civil society group Yiaga Africa, General Musa emphasized that tackling foundational issues such as the census and porous borders is critical for strengthening the nation’s security framework and ensuring Nigeria’s standing on the international stage.

The CDS also shared a personal reflection, revealing that in over thirty years of military service, he has cast his vote only once, highlighting concerns about civic participation and national engagement.
