This followed concerns by farmers that Nigeria is still lagging behind, while other countries continue to embrace latest technology which has helped to modernize farming, maximize profits and also help boost food productivity.
A farmer, Promise Okezie, who spoke to today Fm’s Olawale Sanusi, said farming has gone past the usage of knives and hoes, adding that mechanized farming is the solution to the food deficit being experienced in some parts of the country.
Okezie said the declaration of a state of emergency on food security is not enough, as the government needs to start investing in technology, which he said is the solution to ensuring food security.
On his part, the Rivers State Chairman of National Rice Producers Processors Millers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, AKANDU GODWIN, said the present agricultural system has not been made appealing as existing farmers and potential farmers are not encouraged by the government.
He Godwin also expressed worry, that agriculture which used to be the mainstay of the economy in the past has been abandoned.
Today fm reports that the theme for this year’s World Food Day is “Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind”.
