It said preliminary investigation shows that the scheme is the handiwork of social media users, whose style is to dig up old fake videos that had been discredited, edit and circulate them to deceive the public for their political ends.
The Rivers state commissioner for information and communications, Chris Finebone in a statement, accused opposition parties of manipulating and circulating an old audio clip of 2016 involving the governor and another individual to tarnish his image prior to the just concluded Presidential Election.
Finebone claimed that after the opposition parties failed in their quest to harvest the sympathy of a certain section of Rivers voters, they angrily circulated another fake news on the social media, claiming that the governor’s son in the US had been mortally harmed.
He also urged Rivers people to disregard an old video clip of 26th February, 2019 in which the then Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Port Harcourt, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, had raised allegation against Governor Wike who had resisted the military that were bent on rigging the 2019 governorship election in favour of the All Progressives Congres in Rivers State.
