All is not well at the Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, Edo State following the decision by the management of the institution to increase the fees payable by students.A statement which cited a memo on the university’s website disclosed that incoming students are demanded to pay between ninety-seven thousand and one hundred and sixty-one thousand naira, in addition to other sundry charges. A nongovernmental organization known as Education Rights Campaign has stepped in on behalf of the students to demand a reversal of the fees increment.According to a statement by the ERC, the hike in fees by the Edo State-owned university affects mainly fresh students for the 2015/2016 academic session. The statement signed by the National Coordinator and Secretary of the group, HASSAN TAIWO SOWETO and OGUNDELE MICHAEL described the action by the university management as an attempt to price education out of the reach of children of the poor. The Education Rights Concern expressed worries that such action was coming from a state governed by the All Progressive Congress, which promises change. The group said the hike in fees is unacceptable, and should be immediately and unconditionally reversed.
