18 persons kidnapped as kidnapping activities resurface in Ikwerre LGA

The kidnap of the eighteen passengers which happened over the weekend was preceded by another attack by suspected kidnappers who blacked the new road axis of the Omuagwa-Isiokpo Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, an attack which kept Road users stranded for almost an hour before the intervention of security agencies.

The Chief Security Officer of Ikwerre Local Government Council, Dickson Ngbuomahum, in an interview with Today FM’s Uchendu Ejiowhor, said sixteen of the kidnapped victims have been successfully rescued with no ransom paid.

Ngbuomahum said the commercial bus loaded with passengers was coming from Owerri to Port Harcourt when it was attacked.

The CSO of Ikwerre LGA also revealed that armed individuals in military camouflage attempted to attack a motorist along Isiokpo Road on Monday night before the intervention of a joint operation of security agencies and local vigilantes.

Today FM reports that, in November 2023, five persons were reportedly kidnapped along the Igwuruta-Port Harcourt International Airport Road, while in October 2023, nine passengers were abducted along the Elele-Omerelu Road.

On the 2nd of January 2024, gunmen abducted three persons along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road amongst other incidents recorded in the area, a situation which has raised concern for road users.

In the meantime, the Rivers State Police Command has yet to comment on the recent kidnap incidents in the area.
