An elder statesman in Rivers State, Wenenda Wali, has called on stakeholders to shift their focus from drafting economic blueprints for political candidates ahead of the 2027 elections to setting clear and enforceable expectations for governance.
Wali made the call in an interview with Today FM Correspondent, Eseose Onabu.
He argued that master plans developed without the input and commitment of those expected to implement them often end up abandoned when a new administration takes over.
The elder statesman said what Rivers people need are firm commitments to addressing structural and fundamental challenges rather than the execution of token projects.
Wali also noted that since the return to democratic rule in 1999, politicians have repeatedly failed to match campaign promises with action, attributing the trend to weak electoral accountability.
He maintained that unless voters have genuine electoral power to hold political leaders accountable, governance would continue to favour political cabals and party interests.
Wali therefore warned that efforts by stakeholders to develop plans for prospective political candidates ahead of 2027 could amount to an exercise in futility if mechanisms to ensure accountability and implementation are not established.
