ABEGUNDE was sentenced to seventy-eight months in prison by U.S. District Judge SHERYL LIPMAN of the Western District of Tennessee.
The court also mandated ABEGUNDE to pay fifty seven million dollars in restitution to the victims of his offence.
This is contained in an announcement by Assistant Attorney General, BRIAN BENCZKOWSKI of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney MICHAEL DUNAVANT of the Western District of Tennessee.
ABEGUNDE and his accomplice, twenty-nine year old, JAVIER LUIS RAMOS-ALONSO were convicted in March after a seven-day trial in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.
The Nigerian, ABEGUNDE and RAMOS-ALONSO were said to have participated in a criminal organization in which members hacked emails and created fake profiles on dating websites in order to fool victims into sending money to bogus bank accounts under the control of members of the conspiracy.
