United States President BARACK OBAMA is proposing to widen background checks on buyers of firearms.
The move is among a series of measures being considered by the United States government to tackle the problem of gun violence in that country.
OBAMA is going ahead to announce the plan today, despite opposition from Congress to new gun laws.
The American President said the new measures are within his legal authority and consistent with the Second Amendment, which grants Americans the right to bear arms.The plan also requires states to provide information on people disqualified due to mental illness or domestic violence, while the FBI will increase workforce processing background checks by fifty percent.Also; the US Congress will be asked to invest five hundred million dollars to improve access to mental healthcare.Republican presidential candidate RAND PAUL has vowed to fight tooth and nail against the executive actions.Other Republican presidential candidates have also promised to erase the measures on day one in office, if they are voted into the White House.
