Turkey has promised to help reduce the flow of migrants into Europe. Turkey however wants cash, visas and renewed talks on joining the European Union in return for its assistance. This followed a deal struck on Sunday, which the Turkish Prime Minister described as a new beginning for the uneasy neighbors. A key element of the deal is three billion euros in European aid for Syrian refugees in Turkey. The money is intended to raise the living standards of the Syrians and to persuade more of them to stay put rather than attempt the dangerous crossings to the EU through the Greek islands.
