President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising the Nigerian Army to strengthen its capacity to tackle evolving security challenges across the country.
The President made the pledge at the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 held in Port Harcourt. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu commended the sacrifices of members of the Armed Forces, including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force and other security and law enforcement agencies for their dedication to safeguarding the nation.
He said Nigerian soldiers stood firm when the country faced difficult security challenges, noting that the peace enjoyed by citizens today is a product of the military’s vigilance and sacrifice.
According to the President, the theme of this year’s celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” reflects the enduring bond between the Nigerian people and the armed forces.
Tinubu said the event, which brought together military leaders from across Africa and beyond, showcased advances in defence technology and strengthened international partnerships needed to address contemporary security threats.
He expressed optimism that the gathering would not only deepen friendships among participating nations but also promote the exchange of ideas among military leaders, policymakers, defence industries and security experts. He added that the collaboration would enhance regional and global cooperation, innovation and strategic dialogue in defence and security.
Earlier, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara said the hosting of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt demonstrated the prevailing peace, unity and security in the state despite negative narratives.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies in their efforts to protect lives and property across Rivers State.
