The Senate President, BUKOLA SARAKI, has announced the composition of standing committees, with the opposition PDP grabbing some of the so-called juicy slots.
Senator ENYINNAYA ABARIBE of the PDP from Abia South is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity.
The Senate Committee on Defence is chaired by Senator AHMED LAWAN of the APC who had opposed Senator SARAKI in the race for the Senate Presidency.
Senator ABDULLAHI ADAMU also of the APC is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Senator GEORGE AKUME of the APC is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army.
Others are Senator UTAZI GODFREY for the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption; Senator DANJUMA GOJE is the Chairman of the Committee on Appropriation; and Senator HOPE UZODINMA heads the Senate Committee on Aviation.
Senator ISIAKA ADELEKE is the Chairman of the Committee on Capital Market, while Senator URHOGHIDE MATTHEW heads the Committee on Culture and Tourism.
Meanwhile; the Nigerian Senate has called on the federal and state governments to intensify efforts on employment generation in line with their various campaign promises.
This followed a motion brought by Senator BASSEY ALBERT AKPAN from Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District, stressing the need to curb the soaring rate of unemployment in Nigeria.
Abuja correspondent JAMES IGAH reports that the Senate expressed worry that the rate of job creation in Nigeria was grossly inadequate to meet the needs of the expanding working age and labour force populations
Contributing to the debate on the motion, Senator GEORGE THOMSON SEKIBO from Rivers State called on the government to declare a state of emergency on unemployment as a matter of policy.
The PDP Senators also reminded the APC Administration at the centre about its promise of five thousand naira monthly allowance to unemployed graduates.
However; that section of the motion sparked uproar in the Senate and was voted against by the majority APC Senators.
In his ruling; the Senate President BUKOLA SARAKI called on all stakeholders to commit to solving the problems of unemployment in the country.
The Senate thereafter adjourned sitting until Tuesday next week.
