The Senate appears to be facing a difficult task deciding the fate of former governor of Rivers State, ROTIMI AMAECHI on his nomination for appointment as a minister. The Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges has had to delay its report on the investigation of allegations of corruption contained in a petition against ROTIMI AMAECHI on two occasions.
The Senate had at the close of sitting yesterday assured that the report of the committee will be ready today while AMAECHI will be listed among nominees to be screened today, but there are speculations that it may not happen.
The Integrity Group affiliated to the Peoples Democratic Party is also not resting on its oars to frustrate the screening of the former governor.
The spokesman for the group, LIVINGSTON WECHIE has appeared before members of the Senate Committee to push for the exclusion of ROTIMI AMAECHI from the incoming Federal Executive Council.
WECHIE was made to read from various sections of the constitution in view of the constitutional requirement for the screening and confirmation of a ministerial nominee by the Senate.
LIVINGSTON WECHIE was also shown a court order in which his name was mentioned in respect to the allegations against the immediate-past administration in Rivers State.
However; WECHIE dismissed the court order on grounds that it made no mention of the former governor.
At the end of the sitting; the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Senator SAMUEL ANYANWU declared that they have listened to WECHIE and would communicate to him if the need arises.
Senator ANYANWU however noted that the Senate Rule prevents the senators from taking decision on a matter that is already in court.
It may also interest you to note that in a summary of accounts of his interaction shared on his Facebook Timeline, LIVINGSTON WECHIE made insinuations of a conspiracy by the Senate Committee after he was told that the subject which his petition sought to address is already a matter before a court of law.
