The Nigerian Senate appears to be heading for a showdown with the leadership of the Nigerian Customs Service.
You will recall that the Comptroller General of Customs last week issued a directive for the resumption of the importation of rice through land borders.
But the move is not going down well with the Senate, following which a resolution was reached today to invite the Comptroller General of Customs.
In adopting the motion; the Senators considered the implication of increased importation of rice through Nigeria’s land borders and the effect it would have on the gains made under the agricultural revolution of the immediate-past administration.
The Senators accused the Comptroller General of unilaterally resolving to reopen Nigeria’s land borders.
The Senators warned that to allow the customs directive to stand would discourage investments in large scale rice farming and reverse the gains of the rice revolution initiated in recent past.
