The Nigeria Police High Command has denied banning devotions in primary and secondary schools. The clarification became necessary following reports from various states across the country, including Rivers and Cross River State, indicating that morning and afternoon devotions had been banned based on security advice by the police. However; the Inspector General of Police, SOLOMON ARASE said the Police only issued advisory notice directed predominantly to the states that are prone to insurgency. He said such states were enjoined to apply caution in the gathering of students and pupils for devotion so that such congregations do not present soft target for insurgents. According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, OLABISI KOLAWOLE, citizens are reminded of their freedom to worship as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Police High Command said it did not stop anybody from taking part in prayer sessions organised by schools, churches and mosques. I.G.P. ARASE called on the general public to see the present position of the Force as a necessary sacrifice for the security, safety and peace in schools.
