TENANTS RAISE ALARM OVER SOARING RENT IN RIVERS STATE

Tenants in Rivers State have warned that rising house rents are pushing many families out of decent accommodation.

The Executive Secretary of the National Union of Tenants of Nigeria, Caesar Enwefah, said worsening economic hardship has made it increasingly difficult for people to cope with housing costs.

He disclosed that in some areas, a self-contained apartment now costs about 900,000 naira, while a one-bedroom flat goes for over one million naira, excluding agency and legal fees.

The union blamed weak housing policies and poor regulation for the crisis and warned that the situation could worsen without urgent government intervention.

Another member of the union, Maureen Richard, described the trend as alarming, warning that continued increases could lead to widespread homelessness.
