Some university students have expressed concern over the increasing involvement of political parties in campus activities, alleging that some parties are recruiting students as card-carrying members and influencing student politics for personal and political interests.
Speaking with Today FM’s Uloma Nwosu, the students said there is nothing wrong with learning about or participating in politics, but stressed that political activities should not distract students from their primary purpose of acquiring an education.
They noted that politics is offered as a course in many higher institutions, making practical exposure beneficial, provided it is pursued responsibly and free from selfish motives or undue external influence.
The students also expressed concern over allegations of mismanagement of Students’ Union Government (SUG) funds, insisting that resources meant for students’ welfare should be managed transparently and in the best interest of the student community.
They called on SUG leadership to establish and strictly enforce regulations that impose appropriate sanctions on anyone found guilty of misusing student funds, regardless of their position or status.
According to the students, greater accountability and transparency are essential to building trust and ensuring effective representation of students’ interests.
