Soldiers have been deployed at the University of Port Harcourt in a bid to reinforce security after a protest by students of the institution turned violent yesterday.

Our correspondent gathered from sources within UNIPORT that soldiers moved into the campus around 3AM, beating and chasing out students who exceeded a management deadline to vacate their hostels yesterday.At least one person was confirmed killed by a stray bullet believed to have been fired by the police in the heat of the violent demonstration yesterday.The Management of the University of Port Harcourt had entered into an emergency meeting yesterday and resolved to suspend all activities at the campus and send the students home indefinitely.The protest was sparked by a directive by the management of UNIPORT for students who were unable to pay their fees within a time frame provided to withdraw.Speaking on the situation at the Choba campuses of UNIPORT, the spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, AHMAD MUHAMMAD, said security remains on alert around the university.
AHMAD MUHAMMAD, who spoke with our correspondent on telephone, also debunked claims of police killing some protesting students.The image-maker of the Rivers State Police Command said so far there have been no reports of police shooting and killing, and to that extend, such incident did not happen.
He also reinforced the directive by UNIPORT management for complete evacuation of students from the campuses.
