The Senate activated the process based on a motion moved by Senator CHUKWUKA UTAZI, who observed that that since 1999, the constitution has successfully gone through three alterations.
Senator UTAZI noted that each alteration featured the amendment of various provisions in a bid to bring them in conformity with contemporary democratic realities and practices.
The PDP Senator from Enugu State expressed concern that such alterations were printed separately and there has not been any attempt to embed them into a single document.
Based on his submission, the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters was given the task to work on reconciling the constitutional amendments.
The Committee is to liaise with the National Judicial Council, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Law Reforms Committee.
The aim is to constitute a Law Review Committee that would reconcile all the constitutional amendment, authorise the printing and distribution of the authentic and consolidated constitution.
By the end of its assignment, the Committee would also ensure that the withdrawal of the different versions of the constitution that have been in circulation.
The Senate intends to mop up the different versions of the constitution, which it said had made the document vulnerable to misinterpretation by mischief makers.
