A group, the Sanitation Volunteer Marshal, has called on the Rivers State Government to urgently recruit environmental officers to ensure proper and sustainable sanitation across the state.
The Coordinator of the Sanitation Volunteer Marshal, Sodin Akiagba, made the appeal during an interview with journalists, noting that the retirement of several environmental officers has created a significant vacuum in the system.
Akiagba said the shortage of personnel has affected effective monitoring and enforcement of sanitation standards, stressing that urgent recruitment is needed to strengthen environmental management in the state.
He also urged the Rivers State Government to immediately commence the desilting and clearing of drainages across Port Harcourt and its environs. According to him, many drainages are currently blocked and pose a serious flooding risk as the rainy season approaches.
