Rivers State Launches MAMII to Reduce Maternal, Newborn Deaths

The Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) has been officially launched in Rivers State, marking a joint effort by the state and federal governments to address rising cases of maternal and newborn deaths.

Our correspondent reports that the initiative will be implemented in six local government areas identified as high-burden communities for maternal mortality. The official launch took place at the Primary Healthcare Centre in Abalamabie, Bonny Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, the National Coordinator of MAMII, Dr. Dayo Adeyonji, described maternal mortality as one of Nigeria’s most critical public health challenges. He explained that the initiative is designed to ensure pregnant women have access to quality antenatal, delivery and postnatal care, especially in rural and riverine communities.

In her remarks, the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, reaffirmed the state government’s full commitment to the successful implementation of the MAMII programme. She also inaugurated a state MAMII task force to drive the initiative, which she will chair.

The programme is expected to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare delivery across the state and significantly reduce preventable deaths.
