The Rivers State Police Command says it will commence strict enforcement of Operation Velvet across the state from August 17, 2026, as part of efforts to ensure compliance with existing traffic laws and regulations.
In a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Agabe Blessing-Kaborlo, said the operation is in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.
The Command said the enforcement became necessary following the growing disregard for traffic rules, which has contributed to traffic gridlocks, obstruction of traffic flow and avoidable risks to the lives of road users.
The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, as directing all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure full compliance and effective enforcement of Operation Velvet within their respective areas of responsibility.
It added that traffic offenders would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law, including arrest, vehicle impoundment and prosecution where necessary.
However, the Commissioner warned police officers deployed for the operation against extortion, harassment, intimidation, abuse of office and other forms of unprofessional conduct.
He directed officers to carry out their duties professionally and responsibly, while respecting the fundamental human rights and dignity of members of the public.
The CP further warned that any officer found guilty of extortion, brutality, misconduct or abuse of office would face strict disciplinary action.
He urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users to obey traffic laws, cooperate with police personnel and avoid actions capable of causing traffic obstruction or endangering lives.
The Rivers State Police Command said it remains committed to the effective implementation of Operation Velvet, safer roads, free-flowing traffic, effective policing, respect for human rights and the protection of lives and property.
