The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Gift Worlu, has announced the immediate dissolution of all transport-related task forces, committees and monitoring teams operating on road decongestion and enforcement of daily ticket payments in the area.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Council, Goodluck Nsirimi, the dissolution covers task forces and committees constituted by both the council and transport unions.
According to the statement, the decision is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to reorganise and reposition its operations, as well as those of transport unions and motorists, particularly in the management of traffic and the broader transport sector.
The council said the move is aimed at establishing a more professional, orderly and efficient transport system while addressing reported cases of harassment, intimidation and other forms of misconduct associated with some task force personnel.
The Chairman assured residents, motorists and commuters that, in collaboration with security agencies, transport unions and other relevant stakeholders, the council would put appropriate measures in place to establish a more effective and coordinated system that promotes order, accountability and respect for residents’ rights.
Worlu, however, warned unauthorised persons popularly known as “Agbero” who operate around strategic junctions while allegedly posing as task force officials and harassing or intimidating residents and commuters to leave the local government area.
He said their activities would no longer be tolerated by the council.
The Chairman urged residents and commuters to remain calm and continue with their lawful daily activities without fear, assuring them that the council, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to prioritise the protection of lives and property and the maintenance of peace and order across Obio/Akpor.
