The Rivers State House of Assembly has summoned the Managing Director of Heirs Energies Limited and the company’s management team to appear before the House on Monday, July 20, 2026, over their repeated failure to honour invitations concerning petitions before its Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions.
The resolution followed the presentation and adoption of the committee’s report during the Fourth Legislative Sitting of the Fourth Session on Monday. Lawmakers described the company’s continued absence despite several invitations as unacceptable and warned that a warrant could be issued to compel its appearance in line with Section 129 of the Constitution.
Speaker Martin Chike Amaewhule, while presiding over plenary, said the Assembly would not tolerate what he described as an affront to the legislature. He noted that the Constitution empowers the House to summon individuals and obtain evidence relevant to matters under investigation, directing the company’s management to appear before lawmakers by 10:00 a.m. on the scheduled date.
The Assembly recalled that it had earlier expressed displeasure over Heirs Energies’ absence during deliberations on a petition filed by the Omuohia Community in Igwuruta Town.
Meanwhile, the House also adopted a recommendation directing Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited to pay ₦205,813,285.65 as compensation to residents of B-Dere Community for environmental damage caused by an oil spill linked to the company’s equipment failure.
Lawmakers described the compensation assessment as fair and reasonable, considering the extent of the environmental damage, and urged the company to carry out a comprehensive cleanup and remediation of the affected area to protect public health.
The recommendation followed the consideration of the committee’s report on the oil spill involving the 24-inch Ogale–Bonny Pipeline, which was presented during the Assembly’s previous legislative sitting.
