President Bola Tinubu has directed the withdrawal of police officers currently assigned as escorts to Very Important Persons across the country.
A statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the officers will be redeployed to focus on their core policing responsibilities, including improving public security and community policing.
The directive followed a security meeting held on Sunday in Abuja with the heads of the police, army, air force and the Director-General of the Department of State Services.
Under the new arrangement, VIPs who still require security protection will now have to request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps instead of the police.
