The President’s request is contained in executive bills that are designed to strengthen the fight against corruption.
The proposed legislation included the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Bill 2016, which seeks to repeal the Money Laundering Act of 2011, as amended in 2012.The proposed legislation also seeks to widen the scope of money laundering offenses to be undertaken by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission and Code of Conduct Bureau. The bill requires Nigerian business people to do due diligence on their customers or risk going to jail. However, it provides protection for anyone who discovers and makes disclosure of money laundering. There is also another legislation tagged Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Bill 2016, which seeks to facilitate an avenue for Nigeria to obtain assistance from the international community to fight corruption.
