Premier League referees’ chief Howard Webb has said it was “not unreasonable” for Virgil van Dijk’s goal to be disallowed in Liverpool’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday.
Van Dijk appeared to have equalised for Liverpool in the 38th minute, but referee Chris Kavanagh and assistant Stuart Burt ruled that Andrew Robertson committed an offside offence by ducking under the flight of the ball, which had impacted goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Video Assistant Referee, Michael Oliver, reviewed the incident and upheld the on-field decision.
On Monday, Liverpool contacted the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO), which oversees refereeing in English professional football, to raise concerns, arguing that the criteria for the offence were not met and that the goal should have stood.
