The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has dismissed claims that he would divide Nigeria if elected president, insisting that he has the experience and leadership needed to unite the country.
Obi made the remarks during an interview while responding to comments by former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, who had questioned his ability to foster national unity.
Rejecting the criticism, the former Anambra State governor said his track record over the years demonstrates a consistent commitment to national cohesion rather than division.
“I will unite Nigeria, and I know what it takes to unite Nigeria,” Obi said.
He also dismissed allegations that he had made divisive remarks against northern Nigerians, describing the claims as false.
Obi cited his years of working with people from different parts of the country, noting that his aide-de-camp as governor of Anambra State was a Muslim from Kano, while his administration sponsored Muslims in the state to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. He added that he currently supports Almajiri schools in Kano and Bauchi, as well as a School of Nursing in Bauchi State.
The NDC presidential candidate urged Nigerians to focus on pressing national issues such as insecurity, poverty, education and healthcare instead of engaging in divisive politics.
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to building an inclusive Nigeria, pledging that every part of the country would have a sense of belonging under his leadership.
“I will never divide Nigeria. I will unite Nigeria. I will show love to every part of Nigeria and make sure things are done differently because I’m going to involve everybody,” he said.
