The Orashi National Congress (ONC) has called on the Rivers State Government and local government authorities to urgently deploy swamp buggies to dredge and clear waterways and canals across the Orashi region to avert severe flooding during the peak of the rainy season.
President-General of the Congress, Ambassador Emeni Ibe, made the appeal in a telephone interview with Today FM, following recent flooding reported in parts of the country after heavy rainfall.
Ibe urged the government to commence immediate dredging operations to remove accumulated silt, solid waste, and overgrown vegetation blocking waterways and drainage channels. He said restoring the free flow of water would improve drainage capacity, reduce flood risks, and protect communities vulnerable to seasonal flooding.
He noted that proactive intervention is necessary to prevent water from overflowing into residential areas and causing widespread damage.
The ONC President-General also appealed to residents to refrain from dumping refuse into canals and drainage systems, describing indiscriminate waste disposal as a major cause of flooding in Rivers State.
He stressed that reducing flood risks requires a collective effort, calling for stricter enforcement of environmental sanitation laws alongside greater public responsibility to protect drainage infrastructure and minimise the impact of heavy rainfall.
