Nigeria: Majority of Working-Age Adults Embrace Generative AI, New Study Shows

By Paul Chimodo

A new report has revealed that a large share of Nigerians within the working-age population are actively using generative artificial intelligence tools, highlighting the country’s rapid adoption of emerging digital technologies.

According to findings referenced in a Technext24 report, AI tools are no longer experimental for many Nigerians but have become part of everyday work, learning, and personal productivity routines.

The study shows that a significant proportion of Nigerian adults have used AI chatbots, with usage driven largely by education, workplace tasks, and entrepreneurship. It further indicates that Nigerians are among the most active AI users globally, with adoption rates far above the international average.

Data from related surveys show that AI usage in Nigeria is strongly tied to practical needs. Many users rely on generative AI to simplify complex topics, support job-related tasks, and explore new business opportunities. This trend reflects a broader shift in how digital tools are being integrated into both formal employment and informal economic activity across the country.

Experts cited in the report note that Nigeria’s young, mobile-first population is a key factor behind the rapid uptake. They also point out that while adoption is high, there is growing emphasis on improving digital literacy and ensuring responsible use of AI tools in workplaces and schools.

The findings suggest that generative AI is increasingly shaping productivity and learning habits among Nigeria’s working-age population, positioning the country as one of the fastest-growing AI adoption markets in the developing world.

Sources indicate that continued investment in skills development and infrastructure will be critical for converting this high usage into long-term economic gains.
