The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially approved the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship to be held across Nigeria. The approval follows the endorsement of the initiative by the Senate Committee on Sports Developments, led by Senator Abdul Ningi.
This prestigious tournament, which is set to become an annual event, is a flagship project of the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation. It aims to honor the legacy of the late Nigerian international footballer, Samuel Okwaraji, who tragically collapsed and passed away at the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos, in August 1989 during a critical FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Angola.
The championship seeks to promote grassroots football development among secondary school students nationwide, fostering talent and inspiring young athletes to aspire to national and international levels.
Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation expressed their support for the initiative, emphasizing its importance in nurturing future football stars and immortalizing the memory of a national hero who dedicated his life to Nigerian football. The event is expected to kick off soon, with plans to involve schools from all states across the country.
