The Nigeria Labour Congress has cautioned against using the budget padding scandal in the National Assembly to settle political scores or unduly weaken the legislature.
The national leadership of the NLC said instead of going after individuals, government should do soul-searching on the existing budgeting system that fails to address the needs of the people.

NLC National President, AYUBA WABBA, said the on-going controversy is an incontrovertible evidence of the inherent weaknesses in the budgeting process.

In a statement obtained by our correspondent, WABBA said the scandal also reveals the imperfections and the distrust in project identification and implementation.

He it accounts for the consequent failure of the present model of capital budgeting without a development plan framework, as projects are not implemented according to needs-value or priority.

The labour leader maintained that a strong National Assembly remains a necessity for a vibrant democracy.

He urged Nigerians to be slow to anger in such matters, even as they have little or no reason to be too trusting of any political office holder.
