Still on the state of the nation; another renounced constitutional lawyer, Professor BEN NWABUEZE has faulted the trial of presiding officers of the Nigerian Senate over allegation of forgery.

The elder statesman said it was not just the Senate President BUKOLA SARAKI and his deputy, IKE EKWEREMADU who are on trial but the entire Senate.

Professor NWABUEZE challenged the entire Senate of the Eight National Assembly to come out in solidarity with their leaders over the trial.

NWABUEZE said he was forced to come out of retirement to respond to comments by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, BABACHIR LAWAL that only Senators SARAKI and EKWEREMADU were on trial.

The Professor at Law stressed that the prosecution of the presiding officers of the Senate by the Executive Arm of Government amounts to the use of coercive influence to interfere in the internal proceedings of the Senate.

The constitutional lawyer, who was quoted in a newspaper report, argued that the trial the Senators amounts to a flagrant breach of the principle of separation of powers.

Professor NWABUEZE is of the view that the breach was made possible due to ignorance as can be seen in what he described as incompetent statement by the Attorney-General of the Federation.
