NCDC STRENGTHENS EBOLA SURVEILLANCE AMID OUTBREAKS IN DRC AND UGANDA

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says Nigeria currently has no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease but has intensified surveillance and preparedness measures following recent outbreaks in parts of Africa.

The agency noted that its response is being strengthened in view of reported deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and an imported case in Uganda, raising regional concern over possible cross-border spread.

In a statement by its Director General, Jide Idris, the NCDC said it is enhancing laboratory readiness, infection prevention and control measures, and public awareness campaigns nationwide to ensure early detection and rapid response.

The development follows a declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) that the ongoing Ebola outbreaks in the DRC and Uganda constitute a public health emergency of international concern.

Health authorities say the heightened preparedness is aimed at preventing any possible importation and ensuring Nigeria remains free of the disease.
