Lagos Receives Permanent Rail Operating Licence from NRC

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has formally presented a Permanent Operating Licence to the Lagos State Government, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s rail transport sector after 128 years of the corporation being the country’s sole railway operator.

The licence authorises the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to operate and manage rail services within the state, paving the way for greater state participation in railway operations under recent sector reforms.

Speaking during the presentation, Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, described the development as a landmark achievement that reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to decentralising rail operations and improving urban transportation across the country.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Managing Director of LAMATA, Abimbola Akinajo, welcomed the licence, describing it as a major step towards strengthening the state’s mass transit system. She said the approval would enhance the operation of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit network, including the Blue and Red Line services.

The development is expected to improve rail service delivery, encourage greater investment in urban transportation, and support efforts to reduce traffic congestion in Lagos.
