The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the passage of proposed amendments to Nigeria’s electoral legal framework.
Yakubu made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with the European Union (EU) Election Observation Follow-up Mission to Nigeria, led by Barry Andrews. Andrews had also served as the Chief Observer of the EU Mission during the 2023 General Election.
According to the INEC boss, the early passage of the amendments is essential for effective planning and smooth preparations ahead of the next general election cycle. He noted that electoral reforms enacted close to election dates often create operational challenges for the Commission, stakeholders, and political actors.
“Timely passage of the law will give us the needed clarity to plan, procure election materials, engage stakeholders, and improve logistics. It will also ensure greater transparency and credibility of the electoral process,” Yakubu stressed.
He acknowledged the support of the EU Election Observation Mission, particularly its recommendations after the 2023 polls, describing them as useful guides in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. Yakubu added that INEC is committed to implementing feasible reforms but requires legislative backing to ensure their effectiveness.
Leader of the EU delegation, Barry Andrews, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in deepening democratic practices. He commended INEC for its willingness to engage stakeholders and underscored the importance of early reforms to boost public confidence in the electoral process.
The call by the INEC Chairman comes at a time when stakeholders across the political spectrum have intensified demands for urgent reforms to address recurring challenges in Nigeria’s elections, including issues of voter accreditation, electronic transmission of results, and campaign financing.
