Immediate-past Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, IBRAHIM LAMORDE has filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the Nigerian Senate from investigating allegations of corruption against him. The suit before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja was filed on behalf of LAMORDE by rights lawyer, FESTUS KEYAMO. Among other prayers, LAMORDE is challenging the legality of his invitation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition, which is investigating the petition against him, and has threatened to order his arrest if he fails to comply. LAMORDE wants the Court to make a declaration based on some sections of the 1999 Constitution that the Senate cannot invite him as a person whose conduct of affairs is being investigated in relation to issues concerning an office he has already vacated. He is also seeking an order of the court setting aside all letters of invitation issued against him by the Senate Committee, as well as an order of injunction restraining the Senate and its committee from issuing any warrant for his arrest. You will recall that the Senate investigation of former EFCC Chairman concerns alleged diversion of about one trillion naira, being recovered proceeds corruption. The Nigerian Senate, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services are all listed as defendants in the suit. The last time the Senate Committee held its sitting earlier this week, the lawmakers were told that LAMORDE could not appear in person as he had traveled overseas for medical treatment. He was represented by his lawyer, FESTUS KEYAMO.
