A non-governmental organisation advocating fairness and inclusion, the Rivers Equity Group Foundation, has warned against attempts to shorten the riverine region’s tenure in Rivers State’s power rotation arrangement.
In a statement, the group’s leader, Elder Clapton Ogolo, said any move to deny the riverine axis a full term could deepen divisions and threaten political stability in the state.
The organisation noted that the informal rotation of political power between upland and riverine communities has helped maintain balance and inclusion since 1999.
According to the group, the arrangement was disrupted after the administration of former governor Peter Odili in 2007 when power remained in the upland for sixteen consecutive years.
The group described the emergence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara in 2023 as a restoration of fairness for riverine communities.
It called on political leaders and stakeholders to uphold the principle of rotation to ensure unity, stability, and long-term peace in Rivers State.
