Gender violence claims 197 women, girls in 2025

A new report has revealed that no fewer than 197 women and girls were killed in Nigeria in 2025 due to gender-related violence. The report, released by a civil society organisation, raised concerns over rising cases of domestic abuse and called on government and security agencies to strengthen protection for women.

The organisation noted that many of the cases were linked to domestic disputes, intimate partner violence and harmful traditional practices. It urged the Federal and State Governments to improve law enforcement response, strengthen legal frameworks and invest in public awareness campaigns to curb the growing trend.
