Fresh round violence has erupted in communities in Egi clan in Ogba-Egema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
It is still not clear what is fueling the renewed violence but our correspondent reports that at least eight persons have been killed over the last forty eight hours. Some other accounts say as much as twelve people may have lost their lives in the violence that has affected, Obite and Akabuka communities.
A member of one the communities who does not want to be identified told our correspondent that six people were killed yesterday while two others were gun down this morning.A youth activist from ONELGA, SUZZY IKEAGU said Erema community where he hails from is also affected and has become desolate, because most of the inhabitants have fled their homes.IKEAGU, who spoke in an interview with our correspondent, said the victims of the latest attacks are supporters of a particularly political party, which suggest a political undertone to the renewed violence.SUZZY IKEAGU said most of the people responsible for the killings are well-known in ONELGA, and have the backing of very powerful people in the area. The Youth Activist also said the political difference between the leadership of the ONELGA Council and the Rivers State Government is also not helping efforts to restore peace to the area.
