Former governor of Abia State, Doctor OGBONNAYA ONU, has distanced himself from a report circulated on Facebook recently over the appointment of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The report claimed that ONU had received a call from President MUHAMMADU BUHARI informing him that he would not be appointed as the SGF. According to the online report which was circulated in the heat of the controversy triggered by the most recent appointments by the President, Doctor ONU is alleged to have confirmed to an unnamed source that President BUHARI called soon after BABACHIR LAWAL was announced as SGF.
It was further alleged that the APC chieftain was in the company of persons seeking political patronage at his home when he received the purported phone call, who thereafter deserted him. In a statement released by his Media Officer to clarify the situation, Doctor ONU said he could not have informed anyone about a telephone conversation that never took place, let alone an unnamed person.
The statement signed by SUNNY ONYEUKWU, maintained that the rumour was cheap and in bad faith, adding that it was capable of misleading the public and by implication, injure the integrity and honour which the APC chieftain hold sacred and guard jealously. Before the latest appointment by President BUHARI, Doctor OGBONNAYA ONU had been tipped to become the next Secretary to the Government of the Federation. You will recall that Doctor ONU was the National Chairman of the defunct ANPP, and was instrumental in leading the ANPP faction to the merger talks that produced the APC as a formidable opposition party before going ahead to win the 2015 presidential election.
