Students of the University of Port Harcourt have blocked the Choba end of the East-West Road in a massive protest.
Our correspondent gathered that the students took to the road over the death of one of their female colleague at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. A source close to the Student Union Government of the institution disclosed to our correspondent that the deceased female student had collapsed yesterday before she was rushed to the UPTH.
However; the female student died before she could be given medical attention, as health official complained of lack of bed space.
The aggrieved students want the management of the university to redefine the relationship between the institution and the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
In the meantime; protesting students of the University of Port Harcourt have stormed the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. Our correspondent who is monitoring the situation reports that the protesters chased away hospital workers who reported for duty and also blocked the entrance gate, thereby denying access to people, including patients.
The protest by UNIPORT students is taking a toll on activities at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. Some relatives of patients on admission at the UPTH are considering relocating them, while other patients that are on appointment expressed worries about the development.
The Management of the University of Port Harcourt has summoned a meeting with the leadership of the Students Union Government later in the day. The Public Relations Officer of the institution, WILLIAMS WORDI confirmed the schedule of the meeting to correspondent UCHENDU EJIOWHOR, and declined comments on the demonstration staged by the students.
