FG Appeals Court Ruling Acquitting Ex-NHIS Boss Olufemi Thomas

The Federal Government has filed a notice of appeal against the July 24 judgment of the Federal High Court in Lagos, which acquitted former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Olufemi Thomas, of money laundering charges.

The appeal, filed by the government through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), challenges the decision of Justice Olayinka Faji, who discharged and acquitted Thomas on five out of the six counts brought against him. The EFCC had accused Thomas of involvement in money laundering, but the judge ruled that the agency failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

In its notice, the government listed 11 grounds of appeal, seeking to overturn the judgment and revive the charges previously dismissed.
