Government of the Gulf State had allowed migrants without valid papers a period of ninety days to leave the country without being arrested.
But the Ethiopian government said only a fraction of their people working illegally in Saudi Arabia have returned home, as the amnesty deadline ends today.
The government noted that only about sixty thousand of an estimated four hundred thousand Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia have returned home so far.
Ethiopia’s Communications Minister NEGERI LENCHO said he feared what could now happen to his compatriots who were still in Saudi Arabia.
LENCHO called on them to return with a sense of urgency, as they could be imprisoned, which he said the Ethiopian government does not want.
