The election of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt Branch, has been postponed following a dispute over the publication of the eligible voters’ register and other electoral guidelines.
Members of the branch had gathered at the NBA House in Port Harcourt for the election before disagreements over the voters’ list and election procedures sparked tension, resulting in the temporary closure of the main entrance to the venue. Addressing members, a representative of the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, announced the postponement of the election, stating that a new date would be communicated in due course. He explained that the decision was taken to prevent a breakdown of law and order and to maintain peace and harmony within the branch.
Earlier, Secretary of the Caretaker Committee of the Port Harcourt NBA Branch, Azubuike Friday, said the committee had taken several steps to ensure a credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral process. He assured members that the committee remained committed to taking any additional measures necessary to guarantee a successful election acceptable to all stakeholders.
