The Education Rights Campaign, which is a nongovernmental organization, observed that candidates for the UTME have been subjected to unwarranted hardship by JAMB.

Citing stories of various degrees of difficulties being experienced by prospective UTME candidates and their parents, the Education Rights Campaign said the development gives the impression that JAMB was about to conduct one of the worst examinations in the history of the board.

The group in a statement also flayed JAMB officials for trying to justify the unnecessary hardship as an inevitable consequence of innovations and reforms that are intended to make the admission process more resistant to manipulation and cheating.

According to the statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator, HASSAN TAIWO SOWETO and the National Secretary, IBUKUN OMOLE, ERC maintained that so long as shortage of admission spaces continue to exist, the admission process would remain brutally competitive and as such continue to succumb to malpractice, manipulation and racketeering.

The officials of Education Rights Concern called on government to address the problem of shortage of admission spaces by improving funding to the education sector.

They said government must also ensure that such funds are judiciously used to expand facilities in existing tertiary institutions, in addition to establishing new ones.

They noted that even with the introduction of Post-UTME, admission manipulation and racketeering has not abated.
