Civil Society Groups Urge Rivers Government to Pass 2026 Budget to Revamp Education Sector

A coalition of civil society groups and community-based organizations has called on the Rivers State Government to urgently present and pass the 2026 state budget to tackle pressing challenges in the education sector.

In a statement signed by Secretary General Ayanate West and spokesman Nasigba Peterside, the coalition expressed concern over the deteriorating state of many primary and secondary schools in the state, citing dilapidated buildings, leaking roofs, shortage of desks, and classrooms in riverine communities that flood whenever it rains.

The group emphasized that both the executive and legislative arms of government must expedite the budget process to ensure adequate funding for critical reforms and institutional development.

The coalition recalled that on November 27, 2025, the Rivers State House of Assembly declared a state of emergency on primary and secondary schools due to widespread infrastructural decay. It warned that continued deterioration is fueling tensions in some areas, including Ahoada West.

The group stressed that passing the 2026 budget is vital for rehabilitating schools, restoring dignity to education, and facilitating the recruitment and deployment of qualified teachers, in line with the governor’s directive.
