Some teachers in Rivers State have called on the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Donatus Samuel, to resign over a proposed monthly deduction from their salaries.
In a letter signed by more than 50 teachers on behalf of others across the state, the teachers collectively objected to the proposed deduction of two thousand naira monthly for the Endwell Cooperative Scheme. They said the proposal was being made or implemented without their individual knowledge, prior consultation or consent.
The aggrieved teachers said any deduction from their salaries should be based on clear information, transparency, proper consultation and informed consent. While acknowledging the role of the NUT in protecting teachers’ interests and welfare, they said they do not wish to participate in or be financially committed to the cooperative scheme.
They demanded the immediate suspension of the proposed two thousand naira deduction for teachers who do not consent to the scheme. They also called on the NUT leadership to provide full details of the scheme, including its terms, benefits, obligations, management structure and financial implications, and allow teachers to freely decide whether or not to participate.
