Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has tipped Portugal as one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing the depth of talent and quality within the European side.
Chelle made the prediction while speaking ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal, describing the former European champions as a balanced team with strength in all areas of the pitch.
The Nigerian coach praised Portugal’s squad, highlighting the presence of experienced and world-class players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Vitinha and João Neves.
According to him, Portugal possess the quality, experience and tactical discipline required to challenge for football’s biggest prize and have what it takes to lift the World Cup trophy.
Despite his admiration for the Portuguese side, Chelle stressed that the Super Eagles remain focused on their own development, noting that the friendly match presents a valuable opportunity for Nigeria to test itself against one of the strongest teams in world football.
Portugal will head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup among the leading contenders for the title as they seek to add a first World Cup crown to their international achievements.
